May Dance: Fri, 19 May 2017
The Stirling Jazz Band is holding their annual dance in the Stirling school hall on Friday 19 May. The dance includes three hours of Big Band Swing music in the style of Glenn Miller and Duke Ellington to dance to. Big Bands at dances are a rarity nowadays as the cost of putting an adult band of this nature together is prohibitive and many modern dances depend instead on recorded music.
The Stirling band has toured around the country over the past few years, as well as tours to Germany, Holland, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Britain, and was invited to perform at the Standard Bank Johannesburg Joy of Jazz Festival last year. It has a reputation as a top youth jazz band, performing regularly at the National Arts Festival and with the jazz bands of UCT and Stellenbosch and has had numerous members selected for the National Schools Jazz Band over the years.
The band’s repertoire includes Big Band classics like In the Mood and It Don’t Mean a Thing if it ain’t got that swing as well as a variety of vibrant modern arrangements in Latin American and Funk styles.
Tickets at R80 can be bought at the school office at 735 1444 and all proceeds go towards the costs of the band’s tours. The number of tickets available is limited, though, and tickets are normally sold out well in advance of the dance. Bring your own food and bar. First come, first seated.
